Why Ceylon Black Pepper

Grown in mid and low regions of Sri Lanka, known for its plentitude of the alkaloid, Ceylon black pepper is considered superior to the other types of black pepper found in the global market, as it is rich in piperine, which gives the Ceylon pepper a distinct pungency.

Ceylon produces only a mere 2% of black pepper to the world market. Ceylon black pepper has a high demand and a higher price for its richness in piperine. Tastes richly aromatic, with floral and citrus notes, while retains a strong pungency. Compared to other pepper, Ceylon black pepper is rich in piperine, which contains numerous health benefits. And it is within safe limits recommended by FAO/WHO guidelines.

Process of production

Ceylon black pepper is harvested once every year during the monsoon season from May to August of the island nation. The green colored berries will be harvested and the berries will be thrashed to separate the peppercorns without damaging the peppercorns.

These round shaped peppercorns will be dipped in hot water for about 2 minutes, to provide it a nice pinheaded shape. The peppercorns then be sun dried for 4 to 7 days under strict food safe environment to produce the world-renowned Ceylon black pepper.

Description of each Grade

  1. BP GR1 (Average Density - 575-625grams/liter)
    • This is the highest grade of Ceylon black pepper. It consists of fully ripened pepper berries. It has a strong pungency than the other grades.

  2. BP GR2 (Average Density – 525-574grams/liter)
    • This is the 2nd best grade of Ceylon black pepper. It consists of fully ripened pepper berries. It has a strong pungency, marginally lesser than of the GR1. It has a high demand in the market, and this is the mostly available grade.

  3. BP GR3 (Average Density – 475-524grams/liter)
    • This is the 3rd best grade of Ceylon black pepper. It consists of semi ripened pepper berries. It has a strong pungency, lesser than of the GR1 and GR2. It has a high demand in the market.
